FAQs
What is Walk & Talk Therapy?
Walk and Talk therapy is an innovative approach where we conduct our sessions while walking outdoors, typically in a natural setting like a park or trail. This informal style allows you to engage in therapy while benefiting from the calming and restorative effects of nature. Many people find that moving during therapy helps reduce anxiety, increase openness, and make it easier to process emotions. It’s a great option for those who prefer a more active, relaxed setting compared to traditional office-based therapy.
I’m a New Client—Can I Start Walk & Talk Therapy Right Away?
All new clients are required to begin with at least one virtual session (via video or phone) before starting Walk and Talk therapy. This allows us to complete consent forms and intake paperwork in a private setting while also giving us a chance to get to know each other. After this initial session, you and your therapist will discuss the best timing and location for your Walk and Talk sessions as part of your therapeutic journey.
Where does Walk & Talk Therapy Take Place?
Walk and Talk therapy sessions take place at a mutually agreed-upon location within Durham Region. This may include a natural conservation area, a local park, a wildlife reserve, or a city waterfront trail. During the initial session, the therapist will discuss potential locations to find the best fit for your comfort and needs. Before the first session, a consent form is completed, and key considerations around safety and confidentiality are reviewed to ensure a secure and supportive experience.
What Happens if There is Inclement Weather?
If weather conditions make it unsafe or uncomfortable for a Walk and Talk therapy session, the client and therapist will connect beforehand to discuss alternative options. This may include rescheduling, choosing a different location with more shelter, or moving the session to a virtual format. Flexibility ensures that therapy can continue in a way that feels safe and supportive.
Does IW Therapy Accept Insurance?
We accept most extended health benefit plans; however, coverage varies. Please check with your provider to ensure your plan covers services provided by a registered social worker and to confirm the extent of your coverage. Direct billing may be available if you provide your benefits card.
What Should I Wear or Bring to Walk & Talk Therapy Sessions?
Comfort is key! Wear sturdy runners or hiking shoes and clothing that allows you to move freely. In warmer weather, consider sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat for sun protection. For cooler or rainy days, dress in layers, bring a waterproof jacket, and wear gloves or a warm hat as needed. In winter, thermal or moisture-wicking layers, insulated boots, and traction aids (like ice cleats - can be provided) can help keep you comfortable and safe. Bringing a water bottle is always a good idea, and we’ll adjust our pace and route based on the conditions to ensure an enjoyable experience.
